Hanna Mine Disaster Monument

1903: At Hanna, coal gas ignites in Mine No. 1 and kills 169 miners while 46 more narrowly escape. The accident is the greatest loss of life in any Wyoming mining disaster. 1908: At Hanna, Mine No. 1 again explodes and traps 18 miners. As the state mine inspector and 40 others enter for the rescue, a second explosion occurs and claims all 59 inside.

An alternate route to I-80 is U.S. 30—the old Lincoln Highway from Walcott to Laramie. It runs through the town of Medicine Bow, made famous by Owen Wister’s The Virginian.

Wyoming Territorial Prison, the original penitentiary, was built in 1872. Infamous outlaws such as Butch Cassidy were imprisoned within its walls. There are daily tours during the summer season.

Carbon County Museum celebrates Wyoming's first female Physician/Surgeon, Lillian Heath, as well as housing her extensive clothing collection from 1880-1940s. The museum is home to an original Wyoming State Flag as well as the story of the outlaw, Big Nose George Parrot. It is the only museum in Wyoming with an Edison Foundation collection.

Wyoming Frontier Prison is open daily for tours during the summer, by appointment in the off-season. The Museum is housed in the Wyoming Frontier Prison which operated from 1901 to 1981. The "Old Pen" was the site chosen for filming of the 1987 movie "PRISON" and has been selected as the permanent location of the Wyoming Peace Officers Association Museum.
